Obese Children - Overview

Von makeshiftovervi82, 11:28

It is hard to believe the statement that our society is obsessed with being thin, when monitoring the typical American child's eating customs. Children and adolescents commonly chow down on French fries at fast-food restaurants, while watching TV or munch on biscuits, ice cream and potato chips.

It is no secret that American children are getting to be fat. Since 1960, the prevalence of childhood obesity has grown by 50% and about one in five American youngsters weigh more than heor she ought to.

While the health risks from obesity are fairly well-known, the psychological effects of childhood obesity can be equally disastrous. Overweight children in many cases are teased - by both their peers and adults. They may be often regarded as less desirable to have as buddies. Jokes poking fun at overweight individuals are common in our society. Obese children are forced to put up with societal discrimination and emotional barbs, while growing up. As a consequence, they frequently endure with low self esteem and feelings of inadequacy, and generally are looked at as the source of their own issue.

Many societal scenarios are possibly embarrassing for the kid with excess weight.

Studies have revealed that overweight kids commonly perform more poorly than their normal weight peers in school, and frequently have lower grade point averages. As they mature into young adults, they have more trouble gaining acceptance into future promotions and school and finding jobs. It is definitely no wonder that over time these childhood experiences result in low self esteem and poor self-confidence. This can be the start of an unlucky cycle of social isolation, emotional withdrawal, depression, inactivity, more overeating, and even further weight gain.
